UAL Level 2 Week 12

Monday (No Lesson)

Tuesday (No Lesson)

Wednesday (No Lesson)

Thursday 5th December

Acting Lesson:
  • On the first day back we were given the scripts to our new project called 'The Dumb Waiter' which is a play by Harold Pinter which consists of 2 men who are assassins hiding in the basement of a restaurant.I am playing the part of Ben from pages 18-19.
  • We spent the majority of the lesson reading through a few pages of the script in order to gain an understanding of what we will be performing.

Friday 6th December

Blog Session:
  • We updated our blogs with the work that we had been doing in previous lessons.
Acting lesson:
  • For this lesson we stayed in the room that we were blogging in and instead of the acting lesson we were given the choice to continue our blogs or to go to the drama studio to work, the majority of the class decided to continue blogging.

UAL Level 2 Week 11

Monday 5th December

Blog Lesson:
  • During our blog lesson we worked on our blogs updating them on the things we have done in the previous week.
Pastoral Tutorial:
  • In the pastoral tutorial lesson we mainly continued on the work we were doing in the previous blog session but some of us were called up to the teacher to talk about college and our academical choices.

Tuesday 6th December
  • Had no lessons as we watched the 2nd year level 3's Peter Pan pantomime which was very fun and interesting to watch. It was made more intriguing from the use of different unconventional parts, for example the fight scene between Captain Hook and Peter Pan was done in the from of a Mortal Kombat fighting game which made it more exciting to watch.
  • Another thing I found very good about the performance was that they found ways to include the audience, for example when Tinkerbell died they used the audience to shout "I do,I do, I do believe in fairies" and as the audience got louder the faster Tinkerbell came back to life which I found made the performance better overall because as a personal preference I find it better if the audience gets included as well.
Wednesday (No Lesson)

Thursday 8th December
  • Had no lessons due to teachers working on the pantomime.
Friday 9th December

Blog Lesson:
  • Worked on updating our blogs and writing about what we thought of the level 3's pantomime.

UAL Level 2 Week 10

Monday 28th November

Blog Lesson:
  • Focused on working on our blogs updating them to the work we have been doing so far.
  • Completed more tests and updated our personal achievements page on ProPortal.
Acting Lesson:
  • Recording our scenes for our silent movie for the first time, it went very well as we had only rehearsed a few times before this. Overall the recording went very well as we managed to get it all done at once with only a few mess ups during recording. Certain thing such as body continuity for example remaining in the same place whilst we were changing scenes or ending each clip.
  • After we were done with all of the recording, we watched it back to see if there was anything that we missed out or could've improved on.

Tuesday 29th November

Acting Lesson:
  • Vocal warm-up including repetition of the letters C, G, L, N, D ,T, M ,P, B, then BAH, doing this activity helps with speech confidence and pronunciation. Also kept a constant low hum which helped with the use of our diaphragm which allowed us to be clearer with our speech and put more emphasis into certain words.
  • After completing our vocal and bodily warm up we moved onto an activity based in a art gallery where there were 2 spies that had to make contact and one police officer that ad to try and catch them before they made contact. I played the part of the police officer but was unsuccessful in catching the spies but they were also not able to make contact with each other.
  • We then moved onto another activity that was based a the Oscars Awards Ceremony where we were given a playing card that had our rating on so for example number number 1 would be the highest rated and would be a high paid famous actor and anything from 5 to 1 or an ace would be a waiter.
  • Finally we did another activity where there was a table, a chair and a water bottle and we had to arrange it in a way that made the water bottle the most important thing. Then we had to go to the table and make ourselves the main focus or the most important thing.
Movement Lesson:
  • As our starting activity we used the  the board number activity for example 1. Run, 2. Walk etc. this helped to warm-up our bodies and help to increase our bodies movement capability for the follow up activities and the lesson itself. Moved onto doing a complete full body warm up which included different stretches and different core strength exercises.
  • We then had to work with a partner of equal high and then had to use each others strength to pull on each other and get up, this cause some problems as it would not work if one person was stronger or was putting more effort than the other person as it would just end with one person dragging the other person on the floor towards them.
  • After doing the warm up we moved onto working in groups  and creating a new walking piece which we had to do as one big group including everyone in class. After that we separated and had to adapt on it and add new moves onto the walking sequence in accordance to the beat.
Production Lesson:
  • We were allowed to go home early which meant that we did not have a production lesson at all that day.

Wednesday (No Lesson)

Thursday 1st December

Acting Lesson:
  • As a warm-up to the lesson we did a tongue twister that goes "Which switch miss is the right switch for Ipswich miss" we did this in order to improve our pronunciation of certain words and help the fluidity of our voices.
  • After completing the warm-up we then moved onto an improvisation activity where a number from 1-10 was called out which had an environment based on it. The way it worked was that 2 people were called up at a time and had to make a small improv scene based in the setting and always saying yes to whatever the other person said. For example me and my partner were given the setting of a jungle which was number 4, after being given our number we then adapted it into looking for treasure on the ground, the scene ended with me walking away with all the treasure after using that my partner had to say yes to everything.

Friday 2nd December:

Blog Lesson:

Continued updating and working on our blogs.

Acting Lesson:

We did a vocal and body warm up as we usually do in the previous lessons.
After the warm up we moved onto working with various different partners starting with different lines, for example a few lines that we had to start or finish the short scene with was "Mum said what", "I love you" and "Here?". The final one which was I love you was adapted by my partner and I by proposing a marriage to the other person. We did this activity for the majority of the lesson.

UAL Level 2 Week 9

Monday 21st November

Blog Lesson:
  • Worked on improving and updating our blog.
  • Also worked a small bit on the teaser poster I had been working on last Tuesday.

Acting Lesson:
  • My group and I were allowed to go home early as the teacher was working mainly with another group.

Tuesday 22nd November

Acting Lesson:
  • The lesson started by us all getting into pairs, we had to tell our partner our morning all the way up to when we got into school in the chair we were sitting in. After telling our partner our story, they then told us theirs. Each person had 1 minute to tell the other person. After both partners had told each other their stories, we then had to find a new partner and tell each other the stories that we had heard from our previous partners.
  • After we had told our new parents, we then moved again but this time got into a larger group of about 4 or 5 people depending on each group. As before we had to tell everyone the stories that we had heard then had to create a silent piece of acting. My group and I decided that it would be best if we made a small silent film that included parts form everyone's story, we then preformed it to he class after a few short rehearsals.

Movement Lesson:
  • We started the lesson off with  a full body warm up as we usually do as it helps to relax our bodies and warm up which improves movement capability.
  • Once we were done with the warm up we moved onto improving the certain dance moves we had been working on before, after we had completed the entire sequence we then moved onto group work where we had to make a 4-count walking dance piece.
  • Upon working on our dance routines, we had to then perform them to the rest of the class.
Production Lesson:
  • In this lesson we worked more on the posters that we had created last week. Instead, as I had completed my teaser poster last week, I worked on the creation of my full poster. This took all lesson and I took loads of different ideas from various members of my group. I ended up with this as my final product for now unless I choose to improve on it.

Wednesday (No Lesson)

Thursday 24th November

Acting Lesson:

  • We worked on our Silent Movie Project for a small part of the lesson until we had to transition to the music room to work with the music students to start creating the background music that we would have in our Silent Films. I found this incredibly useful as we were able to assess the speed and theme of the music that would work with out production.

Friday 25th November

Blog Lesson:

  • We were given the choice to either work on our our posters that we have created or, to work on our blogs. I decided to work on my blog as I was falling a bit behind.
Acting Lesson:
  • Working in small groups, we did various improvisation exercises such as 'Postcard' where you are given a country and have to create a still image based around key features of the country.
  • After this we then moved onto trying to recreate scenes from famous films such as, Godfather, Avatar and Star Wars as before using still images to portray the scenes.

UAL Level 2 Week 8

Monday 14th November

Blog Lesson:
  • We worked on our blogs, updating them on the things we did recently in lessons.
Acting Lesson:
  • My group and I were allowed to go home early as the teacher was working with another group.
Tuesday 15th November

Acting Lesson:
  • At the start of the lesson we did a full body and vocal warm-up, this helped to relax ourselves and to be better focused on the work.
  • After doing this, we moved onto an improvisation game called 'This is not a book', as a class we had to all pretend that the glasses case was anything but a glasses case, for example we used the glasses case as a phone, a remote and a gun. This improved our improvisation skills as we had to think this up on the spot, use our body to make it a thing to watch and think of a small piece to go along with it.
  • Finishing off the lesson, we completed a small set of lines from a script, we had to learn the scrip, add some improvisation and then act it out to the rest of the class once it was time to perform. In order to make the script work we had to adapt it and add a story to it.
Movement Lesson:
  • Began the lesson with a warm up, as before with the board number activity for example 1. Run, 2. Walk etc. After that we did more core strength exercises including a plank in a circle, crunches and leg-raises.
  • After we were done with this we carried on improving our dance routines and began working in a group to develop it into an actual piece. After we had worked on it for quite some time in the lesson, we then had to perform it to the rest of the class
Production Lesson:

Where we worked on the creation of a poster for our chosen celebrity, for example my group chose Rihanna. Instead of working on the full poster I decided to create a teaser poster as the start instead.
(This is the teaser poster)

After we were done creating the posters, everyone in the class walked around looking at each others, assessing them, giving negatives and positives about how they could improve it to make it look more appealing to certain audiences, or how to improve the look overall.

Wednesday (No Lesson)

Thursday 17th November

Acting Lesson:
  • Worked in the dance studio rather than an acting classroom. We were given a script and had to act it out and add on more at the end decided what to create from the original text. My partner and I decided to go with a story about the dangers of smoking and how his friend tried to entice him into it after knowing his father died cancer from smoking cigarettes.
  • Once all groups were done rehearsing, we took turns performing them to the class.

Friday 18th November

Blog Lesson:
  • Focusing mainly on the continuation and improvement of our blogs.
  • Also worked slightly on my teaser poster.
Acting Lesson:
  • I was allowed to go home early as the teacher was mainly working with other students in the class.

Monday, 14 November 2016

UAL Level 2 Week 7

Monday 7th November

Blog Lesson:

  • Starting off the lesson we looked at a documentary on Britney Spears where it was the build up to her concert of Work It B*tch, we did this because different parts of it linked into the project we are doing for our production, for example we saw people such as costume designer and hair and make-up which links into some of the roles that people in class are doing.
  • Aside from that we also did this because it was a test to see how well we can depict answers for questions from watching the video itself, and to develop our ability to understand themes from different productions.
  • After this we then moved onto catching up on our blogs and adding more to it from previous lessons.
Acting Lesson:
  • Looked at 2 different silent movie clips such as Nosferatu and Charlie Chaplin's Lion Cage. We did to gain a better understanding of the layout and format and general idea of how a silent film is done. The 2 clips were very useful as they showed a clear contrast on how to perform different genres as Nosferatu was a horror and Charlie Chaplin was a comedy which is conveniently also the genre our silent film has to be based around.
Tuesday 8th November

Acting Lesson:

  • The lesson began with a few simple warm ups which helped us in our ability to move more freely during the lesson which was good as it was the same lesson where we started to begin our ideas on the Silent Movie. After being places into our groups we had to make a scene based around each sentence we were given. My group was given "Leave me alone", developing on this we had many ideas on what to do as a scene, eventually we came up with and idea based around 'Mean Girls'.
  • We depicted from this and created a scene where one person showed up at a party but was not let in and was turned away until a bully came up with an idea to embarrass him, after being let in he asked if a girl called 'Arla' was there so that he could talk to her, using this the bullies then decided to play spin the bottle, after the bottle landed on my character and Arla, she led me to the bedroom and told me to get undressed, when I was done getting changed I called out and said I was ready then the bullies ran in and started taking pictures, the scene ended with me running off shouting "Leave me alone" (incorporating the sentence into the piece of work.
  • After that we then moved onto a scene at my house where my best friend (who threw the party) played by Jordan comes to my house and begins unknowingly mocking me, after recapping the events of the party the scene ends with me being frustrated and saying "Leave me alone" yet again adding the selected sentence to our piece of work. Swiftly moving onto the assembly scene the 2 bullies began to talk about the recent party then showed the pictures of me naked to everyone else there. After ending that scene we moved onto the final one where it was me reading out the comments about me on social media, after reading enough I throw my computer and end up shooting myself after the test of my group read out the abusive comments, then as I pull the gun up it is dead silent until a single clap is heard signalizing the gunshot, it ends with me lying on the floor.
  • We finished off the lesson with each group showing the class the work that they had just come up with.
Movement Lesson:
  • As usual we started off with a board number exercise when there were numbers 1-8 like: 1. Run, 2. Walk etc. we did this for about 15 minutes until everyone was warmed up, after this we moved onto doing our stretches as usual before moving or bodies into our core exercises, this took longer that normal as we had to start again each time someone stopped, this core workout activity included crunches, plank and normal sit ups. Then after this we continued on and improved our 8-count dance routine with the class at the start with music then slowly remembering the beat trying to do it to no music. To finish off we had to find a partner to dance with, we did this for about 15 mins until the lesson was cut short by the fire alarm.

Production Lesson:
  • To finish off the day we had a supply teacher who showed us the work that we would have to create and build on, but before this he showed us an example of his production in order to give us an idea of the work we have to put in and the outcome we would have to have come up with.
Wednesday (No Lesson)

Thursday 10th November

Acting lesson:

As the only lesson of the day we were able to completely focus on on the continuation and improvement of the idea we had come up with on Tuesday, but it was problematic as we had to perform the scenes again but this time in complete silence only using a few select word papers held up by different members of the group. After deciding on what to write on the paper we acted out the scenes and it was clear that there was a much bigger difference, it was harder to understand and follow without dialogue which proved difficult as some of the audience had forgotten parts from Tuesday so were confused of as to what was going on. After running it through we as before, finished the lesson by watching everyone else perform and with a short discussion about the work we are doing and the different changes we know have to make.

Friday 11th November

Acting Lesson:

  • At the start of the lesson we were told to come up with an idea for a new comedic silent film based around the idea of revolution which proved difficult as it meant we had to completely scrap the work that we were just working on. Thinking of a new idea proved difficult as the group was focused on the idea we had just come up with, at the start Jordan had come up with the idea of a do a dance revolution where it was all the students going against the teacher, but we had difficulties thinking about how to turn it into a performed piece. After some help from the teacher we were able to come up with an idea of how to turn it into a performed piece.

UAL Level 2 Week 6

Monday (No Lesson)

Tuesday (No Lesson)

Wednesday (No Lesson)

Thursday 3rd November

Acting Lesson (Silent Movie Project):
  • At the start of the lesson we went through the introduction to the assignment, we all sat in a semi-circle and read through the assignment together making sure we all clearly understood what we had to do and what the assignment consisted of. We also discussed the important elements of the assignment as a group such as the way we would need to use body expression and features in order to further show emphasis as we are not going to be able to speak so we will have to make our actions speak louder than words.
  • We then did a quick body warm up to get our body relaxed and in order to improve on our isolation of certain body parts, this helps to make each body part more free-moving and allows us to be able to put better focus on each body part whilst acting.
  • After this we did a short Mime exercise where as a group we had to pretend that we were holding an iron bar and had to move it around. Then we had to do it on our own one by one and show the rest of the class.

Friday 4th November

Acting Lesson (Silent Movie Project):
  • To start the lesson off, as a group we did a bodily warm including various different stretches which allowed us to gain a better awareness of our bodies, it also allows us to develop our bodies to move better and more freely.
  • Shortly after this, we moved onto a teeth cleaning exercise where we had to Mime cleaning our teeth as a group, then we had to do it in front of each other one by one with Rob adding more stuff on such as miming popping a spot on our face then going to open the door. This helps us to further develop our skills with just using our body which then further links into making our production of the silent movie better as we cannot speak so the use of our body will have to be as good as can possibly be.
  • Then we did a short exercise developing a small piece of work, with my partner, we decided to try and make our piece somewhat comedic, we started off by having my partner bring me some coffee then "accidentally" spill it on my lap, I then get up and start trying to wipe it of, she then brings me some water to drink which is hot so it burns my mouth, I then pour it on her and start to walk away, she taps on my shoulder and punches me in the face and I fall to my knees as she pretends to be a bird tweeting and flying around me, it ends with me asleep on the floor and her skipping away.
  • Overall the piece worked well as the rest of the class found it funny which was good as we were trying to make a comedy, we could've improved on it by focusing and developing on that idea rather than trying to figure out various different ones thinking they would be better thus taking time away from our main one.

The 'Identity' Project

Artistic and Technical Targets:

One target was to be able to demonstrate the use of a range of techniques in support of a performing arts activity which I think was done well as a whole as we devised a whole scene, developed it from a complete improvisation piece into a complete production, and came up with a set of lines that were used and slightly tweaked throughout the whole course of the project.

Another target was to communicate ideas to develop a performing arts activity which we all did well as the focused communication that worked so well all the way throughout was what led to such a good performance overall. We also as a group at the start communicated ideas well as we all came up with ideas of what our scene could be about and worked through each one to decide which one would end up being the best one to use and would be most enjoyable to not just watch, bit to perform as well.

Furthermore another target was to assess selected techniques and processes which was all done as when we were all working with each other we all gave feedback on our improvisation work and used the feedback to better improve our characters.

Devising Process Issues:

There were a few issues while devising the scenes, such as picking what scene to actually do as the overall part in the play, for example my group and I had various different idea about what to do or the main piece at the start of the whole project and as we acted out each idea we decided which one would best display the idea of 'Identity' to the audience and we ended up choosing school and background, but even this had issues as different people were still more interested in doing some of the other ideas that we had thought up so as a group we worked on how we could best include their ideas and make them work in the one we had made the final choice on.

We also had issues on the use of different props and scene length and actor layout for the audience as at the start we did not know that we would later link both groups together so my group and I were fully focused on making the scene as long and as enjoyable for the audience to watch as we possibly could.

Group Strengths and Weaknesses:

There were a variety of strengths and weaknesses as a group, a few strengths were that we all managed to work well together and help each other to improve. It also allowed people to be more confident around each other which reflected very well in our overall performance as none of us were shy or embarrassed to perform in front of each other as we all had good relationships.

Another strength was that we all helped each other to improve on cues and lines which made it run more smoothly for the audience to watch. On top of that, a major strength for the group was that nearly all of us had done some sort of acting in the past, be it from school or other but it meant that we were all used to the atmosphere and ability to perform in font of other people confidently as we had done it before.

A weakness for the group was that during rehearsals, some people did not show up or were not in to do their parts, this meant that someone would have to stand in for them and act out their part whcih meant any changes made to that part would have to then be showed to the person who was not in which meant having to run through that scene multiple times until they understood the new part and were able to act it out well. This then meant that there was less time to improve the whole performance.

A major weakness was that on the day of the performance, a person did not show up which meant that someone had to learn and act their part on the day as well as their original piece, which meant that they were less confident acting the new part and found it more difficult to remember certain cues that entailed to that part. But overall the part was played well even without the original person playing the part it was still run smoothly and full of energy and was acted in a way that made it enjoyable for the audience to watch.

Performance Overall:

I feel overall that the performance went very well due to the planning and rehearsals that we did beforehand, I thought it was well devised and put together, for example the use of a flashback incorporate 2 different scenes to make it work better for the audience and also made it run more smoothly.

On top of that there were also various other things that worked well in the production, for example the music that we used to signal scene changes was included well as the play was about identity so it made it much more realistic to have a song based around the same theme.

Also I feel that the ending of the performance was a big success as it ended with every saying "I'm human, none the less" in various different languages which further helps to link in with the ideas of equality and fairness, it also gives the audience a better insight to the different cultures which is a main key aspect in identity overall.

The group as a whole was very focused when it came to performing as we did not miss any cues and all lines were said clearly to the audience. We were all also very confident when it came time to perform which better helped our focus, concentration, and ability to engage well with the audience.

Individual Improvement Areas:

I feel that I could've improved with my projection towards the audience, as most of my parts were spoken to the other person in the scene rather than speaking more towards the audience which would help to make them feel more connected to the play and also make it easier for them to understand and hear what is going on during that scene.

Furthermore I also feel that as an individual I could've improved more on the use of props during my scenes as it would've helped the audience to differentiate the different characters that I was playing, it would've also been better if I was more prepared for scene changes that included different props as during one scene change I found myself desperately looking for a phone that I could to better signal to the audience that I was actually on the phone, also the use of a housing book was replaced by an algebra sheet which again was also down to the lack of preparation before the pay and before the scene changes.

Also I feel like I could've worked more on the remembrance of certain lines consistently as I often found myself changing certain words at different rehearsals, for example when playing the headmaster I address a student played by Benedict when I would call him either Mr. Benedict, Boy or Man which makes it hard to get different cues right as the change of words makes it difficult to realize the time when.

UAL Level 2 Week 5

Monday 10th October

Blog Lesson:

  • Carried on working on and updating our blogs.

Moved onto our final Tutorial Lesson where we:
  • Reviewed the things that we looked at in our previous tutorial lessons and completed a test consolidating our new knowledge on the subjects
Tuesday 11th October

Had a Drama lesson where as before we:
  • Focused on improving our piece on 'Identity' in the theater and we made the final arrangements to the layout of the chairs on stage. We ran it through twice and tweaked a few things, for example placement and body language on stage. After running it through we played different improvisation games such as Expert where there was an expert on a topic but spoke in a made-up language and a translator who had to work with the expert and look at body language in order to give replies. We also played another game where we were not allowed to say 'Yes' or 'No', we then had to reply to the person talking to us  in the best what possible and try and survive a minute.
Movement Lesson where we:
  • Acted out our production and used concepts from musical theater to make certain parts more extravagant and less naturalistic which is what was wanted from the acting teacher. After acting it  through with the movement teacher saying different things to people about how to improve it, at the end it was a slower but sort of improved piece.
Production lesson which allowed us to:
  • Either focus on the continuation of our blogs, or the updating and improvement on our essay production roles, I decided to continue the work on my blog and fill in on the certain days that I had not done as well before.

Wednesday (No Lesson)

Thursday 13th October

Drama lesson which had us:

  • Putting on the final touching of our performance making it as best as we can for the audience that would be watching us, we ran through it a few times making sure we tweaked it perfectly and making sure there we no mess ups while it was running through.

Friday 14th October

  • We finally acted out our performance on 'Identity' in front of the Level 3 Performing Arts class and the Level 2 and 3 Music class. Overall I think that it turned out to be a big success and was an enjoyment to perform to and be watched by the audience.

Monday, 10 October 2016

UAL Level 2 Week 4

Monday (3rd October)

Blog Lesson:
  • Focused on the improvement of our blogs.
Moved onto a tutorial lesson where we:
  • Looked at different rights and conventions of the European Union and had to pick 4 which stood out most to us as individuals. Then we had to get into groups and pick 4 rights out of 12 which meant the most to us as a group. We then had to explain the reasons for why we chose those rights, for example choosing the 'Right to Liberty' was good because as a group we all believed in the right to have our own personal well being safe guarded and protected by empowering bodies such as the government and the want to feel secure as a person.
Acting lesson where we:
  • Worked in the theater further developing our piece on 'Identity'. We worked on the beginning of the play where most of the group are sitting on chairs and the rest are standing up. At the start of the production we decided to have us all speak about what identity meant to us, but then we shortened it down to 6 people who took ideas from other people as well as themselves.
  • We then worked more on linking the school scene in with the detention scene by looking more at actor placement on stage and the position the scenes will mainly be directed at the audience. Doing this is good as it allows us to develop on weaker parts that the audience would maybe not have been able to hear or see.
  • After this we worked more on the further development of the scenes then at the end when the housing scene is happening at the end, a foreign person comes in looking for a house then the housing agent who is racist tells her to go away as she does not want the likes of her in the country, then after that the foreign person looks toward the audience and says "I'm a human none the less", then after that the whole of the group come and and speak that line in different languages, for example German, Spanish and Italian and many others, this helps to promote cultural diversity, fairness and equality and also helps to give the audience a better understanding of individuality and an insight to the possible abuse that certain foreign people may get when going to somewhere looking for help.

Tuesday (4th October)

Acting lesson where we:

  • Acted out the production of 'Identity' twice, whilst making improvement to various different things such as movement, voice exaggeration and gestures. Overall we decided that it would be best if we over exaggerated the whole of the play as before it was basic and too naturalistic so it needed something else to create emphasis and to excite the audience all the way throughout.
  • After running through twice, the group had to perform to the Level 3 second year students what we had come up with so far. I found this extremely useful as because they are far more experienced. They also gave us a deeper insight on things that we could improve on such as things like certain people in the group were not acting as if they were a character they were playing it as if they were just reading lines from a script, so from hearing this it allows us to better our performance and make our scenes better and not so realistic but more enjoyable and fun to watch.
Movement lesson in which we:
  • Began to incorporate themes of musical theatre in our production which allows us to develop and build more on our body movement and gestures towards the audience while the play is going on, for example, we looked at the scene where we show the audience the sexist stereotypical views on the male and female gender such as make-up for girls and football for boys. We worked on these by adding better movements to signalise the different stereotypes and how to better link them with what we are trying to show the audience. After this we did multiple run through with changes to the whole performance base on the new movement actions and gestures we created in the movement lesson.
Production lesson which had us:
  • Further develop our essay about our certain roles in the theatre.
Wednesday (No Lessons)

Thursday (6th October)

Acting lesson where we:
  • Worked in room 226 focusing on improving our piece on 'Identity'. Room 226 is very small compared to the theater which made it hard to do the play run-through as it was difficult to do the chair lay out with all the scene movements as the space was very tight.
  • After running through the play a few times, we were able to improve on the ending scenes such as the housing agent scene, where we were able to improve on bodily movements, language and spacing in relation to the audience, I also had to fill in for a person because they weren't in which was good as it allowed us to continue working without problems.
Friday (7th October)

Acting lesson which had us:
  • Still working on our 'Identity' piece in room 222, it was a bigger space for us to work in which made it easier for the layout of the chairs to be placed. We were able to further improve on our work. Which makes it better ad more 'cleaner' when we actually perform it to the audience.

UAL Level 2 Week 3

Monday 26th September

Blog Lesson:
  • Continued writing out blogs about school work and events
Acting Lesson
  • First started to get the ideas for our piece on 'Identity'. To start off with we had to pick a piece of paper with the word our scene will be based around, for example my group and I had the paper that had the word school on it.
  • Then moved onto creating a scene which had a laid-back teacher in a classroom with other students, the scene progressed by having one of the students mess with the other student, this then led to a confrontation which ended up with them both being sent to the headmasters office where the scene was ended by having one of the students taken away of the school grounds for the possession of a knife and the intent to use it against another student. After looking back on this we decided that it would be better to not have the knife in the scene at all so we decided that next time we would leave it out and try and adapt it with something else.
Tuesday 27th September

Acting lesson in which consisted of:
  • Lining the chairs up against the wall and we each had to write down what we identity meant to us, we then swapped them around and had to read them all out.
  • Getting back in the groups we were in last time, my whole group moved to a different Drama room to practice our piece of work and link both our school scene and the other groups detention scene together. We did this well with the use of flashback scene which began from the words "I'm here cause I was fighting this guy", after that it transitioned into my scene and remembering our decision before we decided to carry out the scene without the use of the prop knife, this ultimately worked out better as it meant that both students could then be sent to detention for fighting with further benefits the link between both the scenes. This ran on to the end of the lesson and instead of performing to the class what we had come up with, it was to late and we had to go home which then meant that we did not get the feedback we needed to improve on our work and think about ways to make it better over the Wednesday we are not in.
Movement Lesson which had us:

  • Working with a partner dancing, better developing our movement skills
  • We had to choose a character that we wanted to portray then move as if we were them, our partner then had to try and replicate our chosen character as best to their ability, for example for my first choice I decided to choose the character of Charlie Chaplin and me and my partner had to move as if we were that person.
  • Then moved onto various stretching exercises allowing us to improve flexibility and more easy movement skills.
  • We then continued to further develop our core strength doing various abdominal workouts as before.

Production lesson where we:
  • Worked in groups looking at themes of Fairness and Prejudice. We looked at a presentation which made us look at different people in order to see who got the role as the Engineer. Before being allowed to choose who we want, we had to look through each different aspect of their personality and make an unprejudiced decision about firing each one based of who they are but also what they could offer to the job, for example someone was bisexual but had no engineering history whereas they had a competitor who was Transsexual but had a history of engineering so was the better choice for the job.
  • Looked more in depth about our essay roles, for example we looked at different roles in the theater, roles such as Publicity and Marketing Manager, Props coordinator, Set Designer, Costume Designer, Makeup and Hair Designer and Technical Director, looking at these different job roles helps us as it allows us to gain a better understating of our own job roles and how we work, where we work in relation to the Theater and who it is that we work with, for example looking at the Technical Director allowed us to get a better understanding of how they with the Lighting and Sound managers and how their job roles link in with each other in order to make it happen.
Wednesday (No Lessons)

Thursday 29th September

Acting Lesson where we:
  • Worked more in the theater on our 'Identity' piece. We worked with the teacher trying to link different group pieces of work together in order to make larger scenes and to make the actual production of 'Identity'. Working on our piece of work for the majority of the lesson, it allowed us to develop more on our scene and make certain things better  I find that it is better to work in the theater rather than the classroom as we get a better understanding of how and where to project our voices, it also allows us to practice our set up and know where it is best to have the layout of the scenes to best benefit the actors in correlation to the audience.
Friday 30th September

Blog Lesson:

Worked more on our blogs about recent events and lessons.

UAL Level 2 Week 2

Monday 19th September

Blog Lesson:
  • Just mainly focused on the continuation of the blogs.
Moved on to another Acting lesson where we:

  • Focused on doing more vocal warm ups and exercise of diaphragm muscle in order to further develop our speech, helping us with things like depth and ability to make our voice reach further places, for example if we were doing a scene between 2 people, the use of our diaphragm muscle would help us to make it louder so even the people in the back rows could hear it.
  • Worked more on our improvisation work on our ideas of identity and had to make scenes of our work based on the ideas we had come up with over the weekend, for example I came up with an idea based around the themes of the film 'The Truman Show' and acted out my idea with my partner Benedict.

Tuesday 20th September

Movement lesson in which we:

  • Further developed our flexibility and our ability to stretch
  • Worked more on the abdominal muscles and core workouts continuing to improve strength through movement
  • Continued the clapping rhythm and tried to further adapt it by adding different dance moves into it, this proved difficult as it was hard to incorporate the dance moves immediately to the pace of the beat required.
Production lesson which we:
  • Talked about our essay roles and what they meant and how they work with the other parts of the production team, for example we were talking about where they work, how much they earn and other parts of their job role.
  • Spoke about how best to structure an essay
  • Began the writing of the essay till the end of the lesson

Wednesday (No Lessons)

Thursday 22th September

Drama Lesson where we:
  • Worked in the school's theater, this is good because it helps us to get used to the space that we are going to be performing in for our first full theatrical production. It also helps us to know how and where to project our voices to when we are actually acting out with the live audience there.
  • Played various games such as It! which helped us to warm up our bodies so that we could move more freely, Famous Person which helped with our improvisation skills as we had to subtly give away clues whilst thinking of things to say on the spot to that person. Improvisation alphabet which further developed our improv skills as we had to try and make conversation out of the letters of the alphabet.
Friday 23rd September

Blog Lesson:
  • Worked more on our blogs
Moved onto an Acting lesson where we:

Spent the majority of the time playing games with our group where the 1st part we had to look at our partner's face and body then close our eyes and try to describe as much about them as we can, then moved onto a different game where we had to challenge our partners speaking by talking at the same time as then and had to force the other person to stop by talking over them, then for the final part of the lesson we played a game called mafia which helped our improvisation skills.

UAL Level 2 Week 1

Monday 12th September

Blog Lesson:
  • Set up our timetables
  • Looked at ProPortal
We then moved onto an Acting lesson in which we:
  • Did voice warm ups including things such as things like repetition of the letters C, G, L, N, D ,T, M ,P, B, then BAH, doing this activity helps with speech confidence and pronunciation.
  • Focused mainly on name games and group concentration activities such as Zap
  • With a partner did a hand-leading exercise in which Partner A led partner B by the hand for a few minutes and then vice versa.
Tuesday 13th September

Beginning with a Functional Maths lesson where we focused on:
  • Recapping and revisiting what we learnt previously at GCSE level with things such as Addition, Subtraction and Division techniques, for example the Japanese Lacross method and the Boxing Out method.
  • We were then given various different practice questions in order to consolidate and practice the methods we just recapped.
We moved onto an Acting lesson where we:
  • Voice warm ups,
  • Movement acting
  • Improvisation work in which  my partner and I were given a sheet with a few lines of dialogue which ended with the lines "Sorry, it's just...", we then had to make a small improvisation piece, we did this to get used to performing in front an audience and acting with the people in our group.
Moved onto a Movement lesson with Mandy in which we:
  • Wrote on a sheet of paper how to be safe in the dance studio including things such as appropriate clothing and no distinctive items such as phones
  • Started doing stretches to improve flexibility and movement and also did various abdominal exercises in order to improve core strength.
  • Tried to replicate clapping rhythms
  • Worked in groups trying to make a movement sequence to the beat of one group clapping and the other moving to it.
Went to a Production lesson which consisted of:
  • Learning different Production qualities and techniques and how they are worked and how they operate.
  • Watching different performance acts such as Cirque de Soleil and Blue-man Group and had to write down the different forms of production that would be required to make it happen, such as lighting, choreography and sound.
Wednesday (No Lessons)

Thursday 15th September

Starting off with an Acting lesson we:
  • Did voice warm ups (as before) such as things like repetition of the letters C, G, L, N, D ,T, M ,P, B, then BAH, doing this activity helps with speech confidence and pronunciation.
  • Group acting
  • A group improvisation piece in which we were given a piece of music and had to make a scene based around that music, my group and I decided to take the music as being in a sort of dream state and then created the perfect hotel world. This helped to improve our movement skills as we created a near silent scene so we expressed emotion mainly through movement and facial features, this helps because it allows us to adapt to not only having to use our voices, we can also make creative pieces from movement.
Moved on to a Functional Maths Lesson where we:
  • Learnt about Highest Common Factors, Lowest Common Multiples and Prime Numbers
  • Learnt the definitions of HCF, LCM and Prime Numbers
  • Worked out how to make various different numbers products of their factors
Friday 16th September

Blog Lesson:
  • Started the creation of our Blogs, first posts and edits where we spoke about work and what we did in the previous lessons.
Had an Acting lesson where we:
  • Did voice warm ups (as before) such as things like repetition of the letters C, G, L, N, D ,T, M ,P, B, then BAH, doing this activity helps with speech confidence and pronunciation.
  • We then moved on to an improvisation piece of acting where we had to make a scene based on the 3 lines we chose from the screen, my group and I chose the lines, "If I've told them once, I've told them a thousand times", "He sat there" and "I didn't think you would be here". After choosing our lines we thought it would be best to make the adaptation a scene about seating places on a bus and took references from the black and white seating rule from the white racism of early Pentecostalism in the USA.
  • Started to begin our work on 'Identity' which gets us used to working in front of audiences and better helps our ability on improvisation work, 'Identity' is our first theatrical production of our level 2 course. We started off the lesson by brainstorming what 'Identity' meant to each of us or what it could mean to another person, so for example my group and I described how 'Identity' could be identified, so we wrote down words like Religion, Background, Wealth, Fashion, Family and Friends as these were the words we thought Identity was associated with.
